While buying an AC, the gas supplied as per the compressor should be supplied only. For example, considering different compressors, R32, R22 or R410A gas is put in the AC. In this 46 to 48 degree weather, if you are running the AC continuously for 2-3 hours, then you should switch it off in between for 10-12 minutes. This will also keep the compressor cool, because continuous running causes it to overheat and catch fire.
Overheating can also be prevented by spraying water on the outer unit. However, care should be taken that all power remains off at that time so that there is no risk of electric shock.

If you have a split AC, then try to keep its outdoor unit in the shade because it overheats rapidly due to direct sunlight. If it is under the shed then it will have less effect of 6-7 degree temperature.
