AKT London Natural Deodorant Balm: An Honest Review

Listen to this article

Natural deodorant is one of those categories I’ve dabbled in over the years, but my interest kicked into high gear recently when my 12-year-old son entered middle school. I want to help him create a daily grooming routine without introducing anything into his system that might have a negative effect down the line.

I personally have always been a little skeptical about natural deodorants. Most promise the world and end up being disappointingly ineffective. That said, the AKT London The Deodorant Balm ($25) is a rare standout that changed my mind. It feels good on my skin, doesn’t leave any weird residue and actually lasts all day. This is one odor blocker that feels more like skin care but gives me a layer of protection that works. When it dries down, the nourishing balm feels like a powder, which helps with sweat absorption.

The brand’s backstory is pretty impressive: AKT was started by two West End performers who needed a deodorant that could keep up with their intense schedules, and it shows. It was important to them to create a solution that was vegan, cruelty-free and packaged in recyclable tubes, which checks all the boxes for me. For a light scent, I love the blend of amber, violet and tonka bean in The Deodorant Balm SC.05—it’s elevated without being overpowering.

What really sets AKT London’s balm apart is the ingredient list. It’s made with shea butter, calendula and zinc oxide, which not only help neutralize odor, but also keep skin calm and irritation-free. My underarms feel smoother, too, the more I use it.

I’ve already introduced the balm to my son, and it’s a great way to help him develop his own grooming routine without exposing him to aluminum or harsh chemicals. It’s something he can stick with as he grows, and I feel good knowing that he’s putting something good on his skin. We’ll definitely be keeping this one in stock.
