Choosing the worst fantasy movie ever made is a near-impossible task, but if you’re making a list, then the 2010 direct-to-DVD movie Talos might be on it. Maybe not for long, though, as one of Hollywood’s most celebrated modern composers has recently gone to work on fixing it.
It began on an episode of Best of the Worst, Red Letter Media’s YouTube series in which Mike, Rich, and the gang watch bad movies and try to pick the one that’s least awful. Composer Bear McCreary was a guest star, and Talos was one of the movies featured.
If you don’t know who McCreary is, you should. You’ve heard his music as the soundtrack on projects like Battlestar Galactica, The Rings of Power, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
In the process of ripping the movie to shreds, McCreary had a strange realization: nearly everything wrong with Talos could be fixed with editing, scoring, and better sound mixing. Inspired by the movie’s potential, McCreary and the RLM editing team went to work, reworking scenes of the film and crafting an original score for it.
It worked. In McCreary’s hands, one of the worst movies ever made was suddenly good.
So far, McCreary and Red Letter Media have only fixed two scenes from the film. Given how well those came out, it does seem worth doing more. If you want to see a fully fixed and repaired Talos, reach out and let them know.
