London Fashion Week has become the first fashion event which will not include any garments made of exotic animal skin from 2025. This means that no dress or accessory made of skin of animals like snake, crocodile will be seen in this fashion show. The British Fashion Council has announced this ban. London Fashion Week is held twice a year. In 2025, the show will run from 20 to 24 February. Many things including animal skin and their hair have been used in the fashion industry for a long time. The chemicals used in most makeup products are extracted from the bodies of animals.

Crocodile farming in Australia is done only to extract leather. Here it is legal to keep crocodiles and kill them and remove their skin.

The leather made from the skin of stingray fish found in Japan and Thailand is the fourth most expensive leather in the world. Its price is Rs 1,100 per square foot.
Animal derived chemicals in makeup products
Animals and insects are also being used in the lipstick or eye shadow that is applied. Cochineal beetles, the red colored insects seen on cactus, are used for lipstick, eye shadow, blush and nail polish. Fish fat contains a protein that increases skin collagen and prevents aging. This protein is added to anti-aging products. Anti-aging cream is also made from shark liver. Lip balm is also made from this. Sheep hair contains a chemical called lanolin, which is also used to make lip balm, lip gloss and moisturizer. A bright chemical comes out from the skin of the fish which is called guanine. While makeup products are being made from animals, there are some companies which are moving towards plant based i.e. vegan makeup. No chemical of any kind is added to these products. These are made from plant oils, flowers and leaves. These natural makeup products do not harm the skin.
