Does keeping the laptop always on charge damage the battery or not? Learn the right method and tips to increase battery life based on the experiences of experts and users.
A new thing has come to light regarding laptop charging. Many laptop users often wonder whether it is harmful to keep their laptop always on charge. Recently an online post brought this question into discussion again. The post showed a laptop charging and had the caption, ‘Keeping the laptop plugged in at all times causes less damage to the battery than frequent discharge and re-charging. I always thought it was the opposite.
This caption was contrary to what many people thought. For a long time, people believed that continuous charging could damage the battery.
Users told the real truth
Users shared their experiences on Reddit. One user wrote, ‘Nowadays, most laptops, including MacBooks, take power directly from the adapter after the battery is fully charged. If you always use it on AC power, it is almost like a desktop.
Many people said that continuously discharging and charging the battery reduces its capacity. Whereas continuous charging reduces the battery cycles and gradually reduces the battery life.
Some users suggested that new laptops often have the option to set an 80% charge limit. Due to this, the battery does not get fully charged to 100% and the battery life remains longer.
Many laptop manufacturers now offer features that detect when the laptop is being used mostly on a desk and adjust the charging pattern accordingly. One user wrote, ‘My MacBook (2007) battery failed in 2010, but there was no problem in running it plugged in for a week.’
Today’s laptops are advanced
Nowadays laptop battery management systems are quite advanced. Therefore, keeping the laptop always on charge is not considered as harmful as in old times. To extend battery life, use battery charge limits and discharge only when necessary.
