Kristin Cavallari is setting the record straight on the scary incident that caused her to get her breasts redone. The Laguna Beach alum opened up about recently going under the knife on a May 27 episode of her podcast, Let’s Be Honest, where she revealed that she got surgery after experiencing a ruptured implant that caused one of her breasts to look lopsided.

Cavallari revealed the info after a few fans had been speculating that she’d made some changes following an appearance at the Stagecoach Festival back in April, where she wore a cleavage-bearing corset top. At the time of the festival, she was two weeks post-operation. “I was exactly two weeks, so the girls were a little swollen,” she joked.

The 38-year-old explained that she got her first surgery nearly a decade ago after having her daughter, but she’d initially been hesitant to get her breasts done a second time. “Something in me was telling me to redo my boobs,” she said. “My intuition was saying, ‘Redo your boobs. Go get your boobs checked out. At least get a consultation. At least go down this road.’”

It wasn’t until she saw a doctor for a consultation that she realized she was right to be worried. “When he saw my boobs, he definitely seemed a little concerned, particularly about my right one,” Cavallari continued. “And he asked me if I’ve had any issues with it, if it’s changed over the years.” She explained that, while she couldn’t pinpoint the moment that her breasts changed in appearance, she had noticed that they weren’t “laying how I wanted them to lay.”

“He gets in there, and I have a ruptured implant,” she revealed. “And there is no way of knowing how long this implant was ruptured for.” According to the Mayo Clinic, a ruptured breast implant is one that has a hole or tear in it. It’s hard to notice when this happens, but when it does, it can sometimes cause pain or alter the original shape of the breast. In Cavallari’s case, the silicone that leaked out of the implant became trapped in surrounding breast tissue.

“My body formed a huge piece of scar tissue around it, which is good because it holds it all in place—it’s your body’s way of protecting itself,” she said. “That’s why my right boob was definitely not laying right.”

Cavallari decided then that she would go through with replacing her implants, explaining that her current relationship status was a big factor in her decision. “I’m single. If I were in a long-term relationship, maybe I would take out my implants,” she said. “Right now in my life is when I need the best boobs imaginable. And so, you know, I’m sure some people won’t understand that and that’s okay, because it’s not your body.”

The good news is that, even though she never thought she’d get plastic surgery, she has no regrets about her decision. “Doing my boobs is one of the best things I’ve ever done,” she said. “I love being able to not wear a bra in a shirt, and I love when I take my shirt off when I’m in a relationship.”
