What’s new in the world of smile, dental and oral health?
In Research:
When was the last time you considered giving your dental floss a tech upgrade? Well, researchers at Tufts University just debuted a new floss that doubles as a mood sensor. The floss measures your levels of cortisol for an accurate measure of stress.
“We didn’t want measurement to create an additional source of stress, so we thought, ‘Can we make a sensing device that becomes part of your day-to-day routine?’” explains Tufts Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Sameer Sonkusale. “Cortisol is a stress marker found in saliva, so flossing seemed like a natural fit to take a daily sample.”
In-Office:
For Charlotte, NC, cosmetic dentist Patrick J. Broome, DDS, the most revolutionary new in-office product is actually a virtual tool. “Our virtual consult portal is the top tool we use with almost every patient,” he explains. “All of our patients tell us they love the convenience and the personalized video reply.”
With 10 to 15 new video requests daily, Dr. Broome and his staff are easily able to tackle questions about pricing, results and timelines. “Patients tell us what they want to know and submit a few pictures showing their current situation,” Dr. Broome explains. “I send them a short (two-minute) video outlining my suggestions and share similar cases we have completed that give them a preview of possible results. The minimally invasive options are usually a surprise to patients because they didn’t even know those options existed.”
At-Home:
In the world of at-home launches, Dallas cosmetic dentist Salvator La Mastra, DMD, explains that a recent product is revolutionizing oral care. A fully customized 360-degree oral health system, Proclaim ($599) uses digital scans of your mouth to precisely place 60 jets, creating a water flossing device just for you. “Proclaim is an absolute game changer for gum health,” he says. “Especially if you are not consistent with flossing.”
