But Ratan Tata, who taught the philosophy of life to the whole world, never proved to be that ‘lucky’ in the matter of love. Although Ratan Tata talked openly about his love and family. This emperor of the business world also fell in love with Bollywood actress Simmi Grewal. But the first love in Ratan Tata’s life came at an age when he was ready to do anything for her. Deep in love, Ratan Tata wanted to take his true love to marriage, but it could not happen. He himself revealed about his parents’ divorce, his childhood, and this love.
Divorce of parents changed everything
Ratan Tata talked about these aspects of his life in his interview given to Humans Of Bombay in 2022. He told, ‘I had a very happy childhood, but as my brother and I grew up, we had to face a lot of taunts and problems because of our parents’ divorce. In those days divorce was not as common as it is today. But our grandmother raised us in every way. Soon, when my mother remarried, boys at school started saying different things about us. But our grandmother taught us to maintain our dignity in every situation and this value remains with me till today. This involved turning away from situations that we might otherwise fight. I still remember, after the Second World War, she took me and my brother to London for the summer holidays. It was there that we were taught these values deeply. She would tell us, ‘Don’t say this’ or ‘Shut up about this’, and from there the idea of ’dignity above all else’ became deeply ingrained in our minds and she was always there for us.” It was this upbringing of his grandmother that made Ratan Tata a person who probably never complained about anything.

Father wanted something else, I wanted something else…
He further explains, ‘I wanted to learn violin, but my father insisted on piano. I wanted to go to college in America, but they insisted on UK. I wanted to become an architect, but he insisted on me becoming an engineer. If it were not for my grandmother, I would not have been able to reach Cornell University, America. It was because of him, though I had taken up mechanical engineering, I changed my major and did my graduation in architecture. My father was very angry, and it caused a lot of tension between us, but I was able to finally establish my own identity in college, and my grandmother taught me that you can have the courage to express yourself with humility and dignity. .’
We were going to get married but…
Talking about his college life and love in Los Angeles, Ratan Tata says, ‘After college, I got a job in an architecture firm in Los Angeles, where I worked for two years. It was a great time, the weather was great, I had my own car and I loved my job. It was in Los Angeles that I fell in love and almost got married. But at that time I decided to return to India. However, this decision was to come to India only for some time. Because I was away from my grandmother for almost 7 years and her health was not well. So I came back to meet her and thought that the person I wanted to marry would come to India with me, but because of the India-China war of 1962 her parents did not want to allow her to go to India, and because of this our relationship broke down.’
